The big question: Will the new bed fit?

The big question: Will the new bed fit?

No one wants the headache of a bed that either won’t fit or won’t work in the space. So before you decide to buy that dream bedstead frame or superking size mattress you've always dreamt of, to avoid disappointment - follow these essential steps first before you part with the cash...

Double check the dimensions of the bed and space its going into

The overall external dimensions of a bed frame are usually bigger than the mattress. For some beds like sleigh beds with beautiful, curved head and foot boards such as our Annecy oak sleigh bed, the overall footprint can vary significantly to a standard mattress size which sits snugly within the frame interior. While simpler bed styles such as our popular Edgeworth solid timber panel bedstead frame or Enchanted House Holcombe divan set, the mattress may go all the way to edges. The dimensions of our beds are clearly written down on each product page so be sure to check that before putting it in your basket.

Top tip: If you’re tall, remember that double beds are only 190cm long (that’s 6'3") and king size is 200cm (or 6'6") in length. So a bed with a low foot end may be a better idea

Read our size guide for more information on every available size of bed we sell and what might be the best option for your needs.

Check the space of your room

Remember to allow for things like skirting boards, windows and door frames when planning how you want your room to look and feel. It’s important to think about where the rest of your bedroom furniture will go and to make sure you have enough room to be able to access drawers and cupboards around the edge of your bed, after all, a beautiful designer upholstered frame needs space around it so you can easily walk around and appreciate its aesthetics in your space. Some headboards have considerable ‘blank’ or wasted open space behind which makes the frame sit far more into the room than you might think i.e sleigh bed styles or sweeping pillow back designs.

Top tip: Use masking tape to mark out how much floor space will be taken up by the bedroom furniture you’re planning. It’ll give you a clear picture of the space you have available before you fill it up.

Check the overall height of your chosen bed and access

If the bed is going under eaves, a high headboard may restrict how far back the bed can go against the wall and reduce the available space in the room. Usually more bedrooms only have one particular wall a bedhead can sit against when we take into consideration the wardrobe, bedroom door and window access. If you want to consider sitting your bed under a window, measure how high the frame is so you don't block light or access.

Divan style beds can come with traditional ‘strutted’ headboard designs such as our Luna Capricorn headboard or Notgrove solid wood cane headboard where you can adjust the overall finished height when it is attached to the back of your divan base, or simply attach to the wall for a more permanent fixture. Nearly all bedsteads come with the headboard securely fixed to the structure so this makes it impossible to change the height when you get it home apart from our unique and very popular Bisley solid timber bed base bedstead frame or more shapely Minety solid timber bed base bedstead frame with pre made headboard bolt fittings for you to add your own choice of headboard to the head end.

Top tip: If you feel you have a tight corner or low ceiling access to the bedroom past a staircase, make sure you get the overall dimensions of a headboard or the biggest section of bedstead frame made up with cardboard and do a trial run. Its impossible to return bespoke made to order items or can be costly if mistakes are made and we can fit the furniture up the stairs.
